Director, Compensation

Leads Instacart’s broad-based compensation strategy, programs, equity approach, and international expansion work while advising senior leaders and managing a compensation team. Requires 10+ years of progressive compensation experience, deep equity expertise, and experience supporting large R&D or Engineering organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Own the broad-based compensation strategy, programs, frameworks, and cross-functional partnerships end to end.
  • Design and deliver annual and mid-year compensation cycles with increased precision and speed.
  • Partner with HR Business Partners, Finance, Legal, and senior business leaders on executive offers, retention decisions, organizational changes, and pay equity matters.
  • Develop and evolve competitive, forward-looking equity compensation programs and communications.
  • Lead and coach a high-performing team of compensation business partners while maintaining individual-contributor responsibilities.
  • Support international expansion by building compensation frameworks, market data, and guidance for new countries.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive compensation experience, including at least 3 years in people management.
  • Experience supporting large R&D or Engineering organizations and advising VP/SVP-level leaders on complex compensation decisions.
  • Deep expertise in equity compensation design and strategy at a technology company where equity is central to the compensation philosophy.
  • Experience building compensation programs at scale, including job architecture, market pricing, performance cycles, and pay-for-performance frameworks.
  • Ability to turn complex data into clear executive recommendations.
  • Strong spreadsheet skills, including Google Sheets and Excel.
  • Interest in applying AI and technology to improve compensation work, with initiative to build solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting Sales/GTM organizations in addition to R&D.
  • Exposure to executive compensation design and strategy.
  • International compensation experience, particularly for expansion into new geographies.
  • Familiarity with AI or advanced analytics tools such as Tableau, SQL, and Python.

Compensation

  • Base salary: CAD 200,000–211,000 annually.
  • Eligible for a new-hire equity grant and annual refresh grants.
  • Benefits provided according to the employer's offerings and work location.
