Software Engineering Manager, Payments

Leads and develops the Money Movement engineering team, overseeing scalable, compliant payment infrastructure, payment-rail expansion, and modernization into a standalone service. Responsibilities

  • Develop the engineering team across the Money Movement domain and help define the long-term payments vision.
  • Expand payment rails across the United States and internationally while ensuring reliable, timely payments for customers and their employees.
  • Lead, empower, and coach engineers; provide technical guidance and consistent execution for payment rails and money movement capabilities.
  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and develop engineering talent across experience levels.
  • Remove team roadblocks and deliver scalable engineering solutions on schedule.
  • Own reliable, efficient, compliant, and cost-effective end-to-end money movement across payment rails, including on-call ownership, SLOs, and error budgets for tier-1 systems.
  • Partner with Payment Operations, Accounting, Treasury, Product, Design, Data Science, and upstream product teams to resolve payment issues and make tradeoffs that build customer trust.
  • Lead the extraction of money movement into a standalone payments service with clean API contracts and a rails-factory architecture.
  • Foster innovation, collaboration, and engineering excellence while communicating strategy to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Review code and contribute hands-on programming when needed.
  • Incorporate relevant AI capabilities into engineering workflows, tooling, and decision-making.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of relevant hands-on programming experience.
  • 3+ years of engineering management experience.
  • Experience managing a payments platform team.
  • Experience guiding teams strategically while contributing hands-on when needed, including code review and programming.
  • Experience growing and managing talent across varied experience levels.
  • Ability to navigate complex and ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Experience shipping cross-functional projects and driving business growth.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.

Nice to Have

  • Higher education.
  • Experience with payment rails, money movement systems, and payment provider or bank integrations.
  • Experience operating highly available, horizontally scalable, tier-1 systems with SLOs, on-call ownership, error budgets, and resilient databases.
  • Familiarity with AI capabilities relevant to engineering teams.

Compensation

  • Targeted annual cash compensation is $183,000–$200,000 in Denver and most remote locations.
  • Targeted annual cash compensation is $222,000–$245,000 in San Francisco, Seattle, and New York.
  • Employees based in Denver, San Francisco, and New York offices generally work onsite approximately 2–3 days per week or more depending on the role.
  • Full-time employees receive benefits and equity (RSUs).
