Senior Software Engineer, Forward Deployed AI Engineer
This role delivers application modernization initiatives for enterprise customers, building and evaluating migration tooling and generative AI solutions while influencing MongoDB’s product roadmap. Candidates need 4+ years of enterprise-facing engineering or consulting experience, strong Java or C# skills, and experience with relational databases and software architecture.

Responsibilities
- Contribute to customer application modernization initiatives across the application lifecycle, including assessment and analysis, planning and design, data modeling, application code conversion, development, testing and build, integration and release configuration, production operations, application optimization, and best-practices adoption.
- Test-drive MongoDB migration products for customer use cases, drive product adoption, and provide concise feedback to the development organization.
- Work with Product and Engineering teams to influence the MongoDB product roadmap.
- Execute customer proof-of-concepts, developing or extending reusable tools when appropriate for customer success and eventual product integration.
- Maintain broad and deep technical understanding of MongoDB products and underlying technologies and protocols.
- Collaborate with MongoDB Professional Services consulting engineers, project managers, and account teams.
- Assist sales teams in evaluating opportunities with prospects and customers.
- Work on site with customers for approximately 7 days per month, including regional travel within Europe.
Success Measures
- Become an expert user of MongoDB and its migration products.
- Develop a playbook for customer application modernization engagements with MongoDB Engineering and Product Management.
- Communicate complex technical proposals clearly and convincingly to varied audiences.
- Provide insight into customer needs, product requirements, and strategic opportunities based on field experience.
- Build trusted-advisor relationships with field teams and customers.
- Contribute to successful customer application migration initiatives.
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience as a field engineer, professional services consultant, or full-stack developer working directly with enterprise clients.
- Proficiency in Java or C#, with familiarity with database access patterns and frameworks in one or more of these languages.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise-scale software architectures, application development methodologies, and software deployment and operations.
- Experience developing enterprise applications using relational databases, SQL, and stored procedures with Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, and/or PostgreSQL.
- Strong problem-solving and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.
- Ability to work through complex domains, ask effective questions, and introduce software tools and technologies to solve customer problems.
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills for team and customer interactions.
- Willingness to travel regionally within Europe and work on site with customers.
Nice to Have
- Experience using and developing with MongoDB and JSON-based document models.
- Understanding of generative AI concepts, tools, and services.
- Experience building applications or tools with generative AI, including Cursor, Claude Code, Gemini, or OpenAI APIs.
- Strong interest in AI-supported toolchains for improving application development.
