System Engineer - Robotics
Designs system requirements and architectures, then integrates, deploys, and validates robotics and autonomy software on autonomous vehicles and defence systems. The role requires strong Linux, Python or C++, robotics, sensor, communications, and field-testing experience, plus UK security-clearance eligibility.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Define system requirements from user needs and operational concepts.
- Define system and system-of-systems architectures aligned with open standards such as PYRAMID and FCADE.
- Design and build reference architectures for autonomy, mission, and weapon systems.
- Lead development of systems engineering models and artifacts documenting key design decisions.
- Develop, deploy, and validate software systems on autonomous vehicles, including robotics, sensors, and vehicle autopilots.
- Deploy software in field environments and validate functionality in dynamic, real-world conditions.
- Work with Perception and Autonomy teams to deploy and optimize vision, radar, sensor-fusion, and vehicle-autonomy software.
- Address inter-vehicle communication for collaborative autonomous operations.
- Use simulation environments to test vehicle systems and validate software behavior before field deployment.
- Collaborate with software engineers, data scientists, and field operators; document processes and provide system-status updates.
Requirements
- MS or PhD in Robotics Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Optimization, or an equivalent qualification, or 5 years of relevant experience designing multi-agent autonomy systems.
- Strong proficiency in Linux and command-line tools.
- Strong proficiency in Python and/or C++.
- Hands-on experience with robotic systems, sensors such as radar and cameras, and vehicle autopilots such as PX4 or ROS.
- Knowledge of inter-vehicle communication protocols such as DDS and ROS 2.
- Experience integrating third-party software and APIs.
- Experience with standards such as PYRAMID, FACE, ARP 4754A, DO-178C, or similar.
- Experience with systems architecture and requirements writing.
- Ability to work in field environments, troubleshooting, testing, and deploying systems in challenging conditions.
- Willingness to travel as projects require, potentially up to approximately 50%.
- Must hold or be eligible to obtain and maintain UK security clearance.
Nice to Have
- Experience in autonomy, robotics, aerospace, defence, mission systems, or safety-critical systems.
- Experience working directly with customers, operators, or end users in field-based environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document processes and explain technical concepts to cross-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment and under challenging conditions in remote or field locations.
- Strong communication, collaboration, curiosity, motivation, and low-ego working style.
Benefits
