Leads distributed engineering teams building safe, observable agent execution foundations across frontend, backend, and AI engineering. The role requires hands-on engineering judgment, people leadership, and experience applying AI to software development workflows.

Responsibilities
- Lead the Agent Tools, Agent Observability, and Runner Execution teams across frontend, backend, and AI engineering.
- Hire, onboard, coach, and develop engineers at every level.
- Partner with product and UX to turn ambiguous problems into shipped milestones and make prioritization tradeoffs explicit.
- Contribute to technical designs for running AI agents safely and effectively at scale.
- Establish practical standards for selecting and configuring AI tools.
- Coach engineers through ambiguity in a fast-changing technical space.
- Represent the group across the AI organization and with teams that depend on the GitLab Duo Agent Platform.
Requirements
- Experience managing distributed engineering teams through technical leads and staff-level engineers.
- Hands-on engineering experience and strong technical judgment.
- Fluency with modern AI coding tools and agent harnesses.
- Ability to guide teams in applying AI to software engineering workflows and technical decision-making.
- Experience delivering results in fast-paced environments with ambiguous requirements.
- Commitment to coaching and developing engineers in a positive, inclusive environment.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience building and deploying AI products.
- Experience with sandboxing, container isolation, infrastructure security, observability systems, or reliability engineering.
- Experience with Python, Ruby, Go, or TypeScript.
