Principal Product Manager, AI Custom Models

Responsibilities

  • Lead product strategy and roadmap definition for custom models and self-hosted AI capabilities within GitLab.
  • Drive discovery, prioritization, and delivery for model flexibility, self-managed deployments, and AI agent orchestration features.
  • Partner with engineering, design, and product leaders to translate complex customer and technical needs into product direction.
  • Define requirements covering infrastructure, configuration, deployment, and hardware considerations in self-hosted environments.
  • Align the product area with broader GitLab AI and platform strategy.
  • Make tradeoff decisions focused on customer value, technical feasibility, and long-term platform quality.
  • Support knowledge transfer and continuity as the team grows.
  • Communicate plans, decisions, and priorities clearly to distributed, asynchronous teams.

Requirements

  • Experience owning product strategy for technical platform, infrastructure, or AI-driven products.
  • Knowledge of AI model ecosystems, including custom, open, or open-weight models.
  • Familiarity with self-hosted or self-managed software and the operational needs of customers running software in their own environments.
  • Ability to work with engineers on configuration, infrastructure, deployment patterns, and hardware constraints.
  • Experience leading complex, cross-functional product work and making decisions amid technical ambiguity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for distributed, asynchronous collaboration.
  • Judgment appropriate for principal-level ownership across strategy, execution, and alignment.
  • Transferable experience from areas such as DevSecOps, developer platforms, infrastructure software, or applied AI products.

Compensation and Benefits

  • United States base salary range: $203,200–$345,600 USD.
  • Benefits include flexible paid time off, health and well-being support, team member resource groups, equity compensation and employee stock purchase plan, growth and development funding, and parental leave.
