Senior Software Engineer
The Senior Software Engineer will build scalable backend systems for vulnerability and dependency management, focusing on security-report data ingestion, storage, indexing, and querying. The role requires backend production experience, strong PostgreSQL skills, Ruby on Rails experience, and the ability to guide delivery across services and languages.

Responsibilities
- Own significant components of larger deliverables from technical design through delivery, iterating within GitLab’s monthly release cycle.
- Design and develop backend systems for vulnerability and dependency management, including security report ingestion, storage, indexing, querying, and third-party integrations.
- Build and improve systems using Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL, and contribute to newer services using Go or Rust where appropriate.
- Improve PostgreSQL queries and schemas as vulnerability-management data scales.
- Collaborate with product, design, frontend, and engineering partners on technical decisions.
- Contribute to technical plans and design discussions.
- Support engineers through code reviews, pairing, and documentation.
- Apply a security mindset when designing systems and handling malicious or vulnerable software packages.
- Contribute to GitLab Security’s move toward modular services.
Requirements
- Professional backend engineering experience delivering production features and components at scale, with ownership of outcomes.
- Hands-on PostgreSQL experience, including query profiling and optimization, indexing, and schema design.
- Professional experience with Ruby on Rails, Go, or Python; comfort working with Ruby on Rails day to day.
- Evidence of guiding peers through complex work or independently executing delivery plans.
- Ability to collaborate with varied partners and explain technical tradeoffs clearly.
- Self-directed approach with proactive communication about decisions, progress, and blockers.
- Experience with security tooling for vulnerability triage and remediation, vulnerability management, dependency management, or related security products.
- Fluency with artificial intelligence tools and sound engineering judgment.
