Senior Backend Engineer - Databases Pyroscope
Build and operate Pyroscope’s distributed profiling database, owning projects across ingestion, storage, querying, integrations, and operational excellence. The role requires production distributed-systems experience, strong software craftsmanship, customer-oriented product judgment, and comfort with on-call responsibilities.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Lead projects from concept to rollout, including design, delivery, operations, and customer follow-up.
- Design, build, and operate core components of a distributed database, including ingestion, storage, and query systems.
- Shape the roadmap by joining customer calls, translating pain points into deliverables, and acting with product ownership.
- Drive operational excellence against SLOs and unit-cost targets; reduce toil through automation and improve on-call operations.
- Partner with App Observability, Alloy, Tempo, and other database teams.
- Support teammates through design discussions, code review, and pairing in a fully remote environment.
- Participate in an EMEA on-call rotation and contribute to incident response and post-incident learning.
- Contribute to the Pyroscope open-source community, review external contributions, and help guide the project.
Example Projects
- Adaptive Profiles ingestion, sampling, aggregation, and transparency metrics.
- Query fairness, asynchronous execution, and read-path autoscaling for large queries.
- Bi-directional trace-to-profile correlation.
- Structured APIs, CLI tooling, and benchmarks for AI-assisted workflows.
- Cell lifecycle automation for BYOC and regional deployments.
- OpenTelemetry-native profiling ingestion, storage, and query capabilities.
Requirements

- Experience with one or more programming languages such as Rust, C, C++, Python, or Java.
- Production experience building and operating distributed cloud services.
- Understanding of multi-tenant data systems and trade-offs involving performance, cost, and complexity.
- Strong product sense and comfort working directly with customers and ambiguity.
- Strong software craftsmanship, including clean, robust, performant, maintainable code.
- Operational experience involving on-call, SRE practices, or infrastructure as code.
- Pragmatic approach using short feedback loops to analyze, design, deliver, learn, and iterate.
- Clear communication skills for remote, asynchronous collaboration.
Nice-to-haves
- Profiling and performance-engineering experience, including flamegraphs, pprof, or perf.
- OpenTelemetry or large-scale observability experience.
- Experience operating multi-tenant SaaS infrastructure at scale on Kubernetes.
- Experience building for AI or LLM consumers.
Compensation and Benefits
- Fully remote work with modern AI coding assistants and a company-funded usage budget, subject to security guidelines.
- Access to frontier AI models for development workflows.
