Senior engineer responsible for designing, delivering, and operating distributed systems supporting Cloudflare’s application security products. Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain software systems for Cloudflare’s application security offerings, including Rate Limiting and Web Application Firewall products.
- Lead technical design and execution for complex projects, defining architecture, tradeoffs, milestones, and delivery plans.
- Collaborate with security, network engineering, SRE, and product management teams on scalable solutions.
- Identify systemic improvements, reduce operational toil, and influence long-term engineering direction.
- Review code and technical work throughout the development lifecycle.
- Mentor engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and design feedback.
- Operate reliable, fault-tolerant distributed systems at scale.
- Participate in on-call support outside standard working hours when needed.
Requirements
- 6+ years of relevant professional experience with a technology company.
- Strong programming skills in Rust, Go, C++, or a similar systems-level language.
- Experience leading complex technical projects from ambiguity through delivery.
- Experience building and operating distributed systems.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, empathy, teamwork, and ownership.
- Experience mentoring engineers, reviewing technical designs, and providing high-quality code reviews.
- Experience monitoring, alerting, and debugging high-volume production systems.
- Experience with databases, including PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, and Memcached.
Nice to Have
- Experience influencing technical direction across a team or product area.
- Experience improving engineering practices, operational processes, or production-service reliability.
- Experience with modern Unix/Linux development and runtime environments.
- Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
Compensation
- Portugal-based hires: estimated annual salary of €66,000–€91,000.
- Eligible to participate in Cloudflare’s equity plan.
