Senior Software Engineer, Service Tools
Build developer tools and infrastructure that improve the development lifecycle for Airbnb’s backend engineers, including build systems, CI/CD integrations, editor tooling, and testing. The role requires 6+ years of industry experience, backend programming expertise, distributed-systems knowledge, build-system experience, and extensive JVM experience.

Responsibilities
- Build Airbnb’s next-generation build system using technologies such as Bazel.
- Integrate the build system with CI/CD tooling, including merge queues, code coverage, and integration testing.
- Improve the IntelliJ editor experience for backend developers.
- Shape technical strategy across Developer Experience, Developer Velocity, Debuggability, Resilience, and Reliability while reducing cost.
- Partner with engineering leaders across Airbnb to drive adoption of new capabilities.
- Contribute as a player/coach, supporting code quality, craftsmanship, and operational excellence.
Requirements
- Professional-level fluency in English.
- 6+ years of industry experience.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency in one or more backend server languages, such as Java, Ruby, Go, or C++.
- Experience with architectural patterns for high-scale distributed products and services, including well-designed APIs, data pipelines, and efficient algorithms.
- Experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams with design, product, and data science partners.
- Experience working directly with build systems.
- Experience working with large monorepos.
- Extensive JVM experience.
- Ability to tackle large, open-ended projects and drive significant business impact.
- Strong collaboration skills across product reviews, code reviews, and architecture discussions.
- Motivation to improve teammate productivity and work on infrastructure that has broad organizational impact.
Nice to Have
- Hands-on experience with Bazel.
