Engineering Manager
Leads a distributed team responsible for SpotOn’s Android POS checkout and payments experience, guiding execution, architecture, reliability, and cross-functional delivery. Requires engineering management experience, a strong senior software engineering background, and deep native Android expertise.

Responsibilities
- Lead the Express POS Checkout & Payments Experience team of approximately six to seven engineers and contractors.
- Foster an inclusive, high-performing team culture across distributed time zones, with asynchronous communication and aligned execution.
- Own execution for checkout flows including card and cash payments, split payments, tipping, discounts, gift cards, refunds, voids, receipts, offline flows, and related order/payment data.
- Partner with Product and Design to define and deliver customer-centered checkout experiences.
- Collaborate with Financial Services on SpotOn’s internal Payments SDK.
- Guide technical decisions across native Android implementation and backend services evolving toward event-driven architecture with Kafka.
- Improve checkout time, success rate, crash-free sessions, payment accuracy, support case frequency, and incident frequency.
- Establish engineering practices for quality, testing, observability, incident readiness, and production support.
- Participate in the Engineering Manager incident commander rotation and support checkout and payment incidents.
- Manage delivery risks, communicate status, and keep stakeholders informed.
- Develop engineers through feedback, coaching, career development, and delegation.
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience directly managing software engineers, including coaching, mentoring, evaluating, and developing technical talent.
- Prior senior- or staff-level software engineering experience with a deep understanding of production systems.
- Deep experience with native Android development, including modern Kotlin architecture, legacy Java codebases, implementation tradeoffs, code quality, and production debugging.
- Familiarity with modern backend services and distributed systems.
- Experience leading product-focused engineering teams across distributed locations and time zones, specifically between the United States and Europe.
- Strong technical judgment for architecture guidance, design reviews, and pragmatic tradeoffs.
- Experience improving reliability, performance, and operational quality through metrics, observability, incident response, and continuous improvement.
- Ability to collaborate with Product and Design to translate ambiguous customer and business problems into engineering plans.
- Strong bias toward action balanced with judgment around quality, reliability, and customer impact.
Nice to Have
- Experience in POS, payments, restaurant technology, fintech, mobile commerce, or other mission-critical transaction systems.
- Experience with card-present payments, payment terminals, EMV, PCI, contactless payments, refunds, settlement, reconciliation, idempotency, offline payments, or payment retry and error handling.
- Experience integrating internal or external SDKs owned by another team.
- Experience with event-driven architecture and Kafka.
- Experience with AI-assisted development workflows or responsible use of AI coding agents.
