Staff Software Engineer, Business Insurance

Build and launch scalable, AI-powered Business Insurance products from design through production, while partnering cross-functionally and mentoring engineers. Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and test reliable, scalable Business Insurance products.
  • Design and implement innovative AI-powered Business Insurance experiences.
  • Iterate quickly based on feedback and metrics after features launch.
  • Partner with product, design, and cross-functional partners to refine ideas, shape scope, and iterate on end-to-end experiences.
  • Mentor and develop engineers through pairing, code review, and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software development experience.
  • 2+ years building customer-facing products at scale.
  • AI-native mindset, with AI tools embedded in daily workflows.
  • Experience delivering end-to-end, multi-quarter projects from scoping and planning through execution, stakeholder management, and launch.
  • Ability to bring clarity and simplicity to complex, ambiguous problems.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs and align solutions with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong platform and application engineering experience, including services, APIs, data flows, and observability.
  • Two-day travel to a Gusto office is required for onboarding.

Nice to haves

  • Hands-on experience building, deploying, and evaluating AI solutions in production.
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails and Python.

Compensation and benefits

  • Cash compensation is targeted at $163,000–$204,000 in Denver and most remote locations, and $197,000–$247,000 in San Francisco and New York.
  • Stock equity is additional.
  • Full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).
  • Final offer amounts vary based on experience and expertise.
