Senior Software Engineer
Build and operate distributed infrastructure powering Hiya’s privacy-aware spam and scam detection systems. The role requires strong production engineering experience across microservices, networks, databases, reliability, and data or machine-learning pipelines.

Responsibilities
- Own the complete development lifecycle for spam and scam detection infrastructure, including solution research, implementation, testing, deployment, production maintenance, and monitoring.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and improve system reliability through rapid incident recognition and resolution.
- Design and build privacy-aware, regulation-compliant frameworks that enable data scientists to develop, test, and deploy scam detection models using call data.
- Make independent implementation decisions and lead collaborative design discussions focused on system quality, maintainability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Evaluate tradeoffs between immediate production fixes and durable solutions, prioritizing service quality and resilience.
- Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and engineering teams to align technical decisions with business impact and user needs.
- Promote engineering patterns, design principles, and architectural decisions across teams.
- Influence project planning and team practices by surfacing issues early and clearly reasoning about business impact versus cost.
Requirements
- 4+ years of software engineering experience with strong expertise in distributed systems, microservices, network architecture, and database systems.
- Experience operating distributed systems in production.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve production issues quickly.
- Relevant technical experience may include RxM engineering, TCP/IP, DNS resolution, and web backend development.
- Ability to evaluate immediate fixes against long-term solutions.
- Strong focus on service quality, reliability, and system resilience.
- Ability to work independently while involving others appropriately in design discussions.
- Confidence making technical decisions and explaining tradeoffs.
- Interest in agentic workflows, including engineering automation and customer-facing applications.
Nice-to-haves
- 6+ years of software engineering experience.
- Experience building frameworks or infrastructure for data science or machine learning workflows.
- Functional programming experience.
- Experience with data processing pipelines, especially Kafka or similar technologies.
- Familiarity with client-side processing pipelines.
- DevOps, monitoring, and observability experience.
- Familiarity with on-call rotations.
