Senior Backend Engineer , Plan: Planning Views
Build and evolve high-scale backend and full-stack features for GitLab’s work items and planning platform. The role requires Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL performance expertise, API design, strong testing practices, product thinking, and experience mentoring engineers.

Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Product to shape requirements and break projects into shippable iterations.
- Design and implement backend features across the GitLab monolith, including GraphQL and REST APIs and real-time subscriptions, with a focus on performance, reliability, and user impact.
- Improve PostgreSQL performance at scale through query and write optimization, denormalization, and table partitioning; move workloads to Elasticsearch or ClickHouse when appropriate.
- Contribute to real-time features that keep work item information current.
- Create proofs of concept for complex work and ensure quality through extensive testing and safe feature-flagged rollouts.
- Mentor engineers and open source contributors through code reviews, pairing, feedback, issue preparation, and contribution reviews.
- Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve observability.
- Improve developer experience, including test infrastructure, review processes, retrospectives, and team practices.
Requirements
- Strong product mindset and user focus.
- Experience leading and supporting other engineers, including driving projects involving several engineers over multiple months.
- Full-stack experience with a current backend focus.
- Proficiency with Ruby and Ruby on Rails in a large, mature codebase.
- Strong PostgreSQL skills, including query and write optimization, indexing, denormalization, and partitioning.
- Experience designing and evolving GraphQL and/or REST APIs with scalability, backward compatibility, and clear frontend contracts in mind.
- Experience improving large automated test suites, including their performance and reliability.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in an asynchronous, distributed environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience integrating AI into development workflows or developing AI-powered features.
- Experience with Elasticsearch, ClickHouse, or Python.
