Open Science Policy and Operations Manager

Responsibilities

• Support the Head of Open Science with initiative tracking, priority management, materials preparation, and follow-through across workstreams.
• Develop and implement employee training and adherence processes for the open science policy.
• Maintain intake tracking, decision logs, meeting notes, and CRM-style records.
• Identify operational gaps and improve workflows, documentation, and coordination.
• Serve as the first point of contact for internal open science policy questions and escalate issues when appropriate.
• Screen inbound proposals for open science tools, platforms, and initiatives; assess alignment and synthesize findings for leadership.
• Track opportunities and maintain timely communication with external partners.
• Liaise with researchers, tool developers, funders, and collaborators.
• Represent open science values and priorities in external interactions.
• Attend meetings, workshops, and events on behalf of the Head of Open Science; communicate decisions, context, and recommendations.
• Support hiring through candidate sourcing, initial interviews, interview coordination, and feedback synthesis.
• Train and onboard team members, fellows, and collaborators on open science practices.
• Draft summaries, briefing documents, and internal notes, and maintain program documentation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
• 3–6 years of experience in project management, program coordination, or operations.
• Experience in research support, community management, or similar work in open science, academia, nonprofits, or technology-adjacent environments.
• Familiarity with open science concepts and ecosystems, including open access, open data, open tools, preprints, and research infrastructure.
• Strong operational and stakeholder-management skills.
• Excellent communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences.
• High judgment and discretion when representing an organization or leadership.
• Self-directed, high-agency approach and comfort working in ambiguous environments.

• Experience working with researchers, tool builders, or funders in open science or research infrastructure.
• Experience operationalizing institutional policies through training or documentation.
• Experience conducting interviews, evaluating proposals, or supporting hiring.
• Ability to synthesize complex information into clear summaries and recommendations.
• Experience working with senior leadership in a coordinating or right-hand role.
• Interest in the future of scientific institutions, incentives, and knowledge production.
