Build and scale Gusto’s Payments platform, designing fault-tolerant distributed systems and guiding large technical projects end to end. The role requires 7+ years of experience, strong architectural judgment, and expertise with production software; payments or accounting experience is preferred.

Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test infrastructure for Payments and Risk teams to create tailored experiences across current and future products.
- Scale Ruby/Rails and TypeScript/React applications.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Product Management, Design, Data Science, Operations, and other cross-functional teams on complex problems.
- Build software platforms powering first- and third-party products serving millions of businesses.
- Mentor and develop fellow engineers.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional experience.
- Experience building fault-tolerant, mission-critical software and robust distributed systems using multiple general-purpose programming languages.
- Experience influencing and guiding multiple teams through scaling, refactoring, and optimizing legacy products.
- Experience architecting, building, and testing large-scale production code that is maintainable, structured, and well documented.
- Ability to bring clarity and simplicity to complex, ambiguous problems.
- Strong communication skills, including explaining technical complexity and facilitating informed tradeoffs.
Nice to Have
- Experience with payments or accounting systems.
- Experience with Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, and React.
Compensation
- Denver and most remote locations: $183,000–$200,000 per year.
- San Francisco, Seattle, and New York: $222,000–$245,000 per year.
- Additional compensation may include benefits and equity (RSUs).
