Senior Backend Engineer
Own the end-to-end delivery and operation of backend services for a multi-tenant, AI-powered SaaS platform. The role requires 5+ years of backend engineering experience, deep PHP/Laravel expertise, strong AWS and data-modeling skills, and experience with asynchronous systems and APIs.

Responsibilities
- Design and build backend services in PHP and Laravel with clear domain boundaries and maintainable business logic.
- Own MongoDB schemas, indexes, query performance, and safe migrations for multi-tenant workloads.
- Build reliable asynchronous, event-driven systems using queues, jobs, retries, idempotency, backpressure, and graceful failure handling.
- Design, version, evolve, and maintain API contracts with backward compatibility and deprecation planning.
- Implement secure tenant isolation, authorization, sensitive-data handling, auditability, secrets management, privacy controls, and secure AI-assisted workflows.
- Operate third-party integrations including Twilio, Stripe, PayPal, Google, Outlook, and SIS/CRM systems.
- Monitor performance, reliability, and cost at scale, including query patterns, N+1 issues, payload sizes, and tenant-level production behavior.
- Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests; use Playwright or comparable tools for E2E coverage.
- Ship safely with feature flags, monitor production services using Sentry and CloudWatch, and resolve incidents and triage issues.
- Lead technical design, communicate architectural trade-offs, improve work through review, mentor engineers, coordinate cross-team changes, and drive systemic improvements.
- Apply approved AI development tools thoughtfully across design, coding, testing, debugging, and delivery; review, test, and own all AI-assisted output.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience, including significant experience at or near Senior level in a complex multi-tenant SaaS product.
- Deep expertise in PHP and Laravel, including service and domain design, asynchronous and queue primitives, and performance at scale.
- Strong data modeling skills, ideally with MongoDB, including schema design, index design, query performance, and multi-tenant considerations.
- Experience building asynchronous, event-driven systems with SQS or comparable queuing technologies, including idempotency, retries, and failure modes.
- Hands-on AWS experience with ECS/Fargate, Lambda, SQS/SNS, EventBridge, and S3 as a service owner.
- Experience designing and versioning APIs used by other teams and customers.
- Experience implementing third-party API integrations, including authentication, retries, and reconciliation.
- Automated testing experience across multiple layers.
- Excellent written communication, including technical documentation and self-contained pull request descriptions.
- Current hands-on fluency with agentic AI development tooling across the software lifecycle.
Nice-to-haves
- TypeScript/Node.js and NestJS experience.
- GraphQL experience.
- Playwright or comparable end-to-end testing experience.
- Production experience with OpenAI APIs or comparable LLM platforms.
- Experience with Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, or comparable AI development tools.
