Engineering Manager II - Whatsapp

Responsibilities

• Architect for massive scale by owning high-level architecture and scaling decisions for core Phone platform components, including CPaaS abstractions, provider adapters, and shared messaging and voice APIs supporting billions of monthly events.
• Own Phone Billing end to end, including usage metering, rating, reserve/commit lifecycle, idempotency, reconciliation, and audit trails for Phone and WhatsApp channels.
• Lead the evolution of Trust & Compliance systems into a configuration-driven, rules-based platform that adapts to regulatory and carrier requirements.
• Design and execute initiatives improving reliability, latency, and throughput across high-concurrency APIs and workflows serving millions of businesses.
• Evolve monitoring, alerting, and incident response strategies, including financial-invariant alerting, using Prometheus and Grafana.
• Use LLMs and AI tools to write, refactor, test, and debug code while implementing reliability guardrails.
• Partner with product, infrastructure, security, finance, and legal teams on data integrity, access control, and compliance.
• Develop Engineering Manager I leaders and senior engineers, build the leadership pipeline, plan succession, and raise the hiring bar.
• Participate in design reviews, technical deep dives, and on-call rotations.

Requirements

• 9+ years of backend engineering experience and 2+ years of leadership experience.
• Proven experience designing fault-tolerant systems operating at billions of hits or events.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and asynchronous job processing.
• Experience building correctness-critical systems such as metering, ledgers, billing, or payments.
• Working knowledge of idempotency, exactly-once semantics, and reconciliation.
• Experience optimizing availability, performance, and reliability in production systems under load.
• Strong experience with relational and NoSQL data models, especially complex transactional data.
• Experience designing policy- or rules-driven systems that evolve with external requirements.
• Familiarity with monitoring, SLOs, and production root-cause analysis.
• Familiarity with hallucination mitigation strategies, including code constraints, test scaffolding, embeddings, and context injection.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, including with Finance, Legal, and external partners.
• Pragmatic, hands-on leadership balancing long-term vision with iterative execution.

Preferred Experience

• Usage-based billing or metering engines in high-volume products, including millions of transactional events per hour.
• Telecom trust and compliance regimes, including 10DLC, toll-free verification, TCPA/TSR, DLT, carrier filtering, or number portability.
• Provider-agnostic integration layers across multiple third-party vendors.
• AI tools and communications APIs such as Twilio or Plivo.
• Contributions to open-source tools, internal platforms, or engineering blogs.
