Software Engineer, Tools and Automation
Founding engineer responsible for the architecture, development, and operation of Benchling’s internal tooling and automation systems. The role requires 7+ years of production software engineering experience, strong integration and security fundamentals, and hands-on technical leadership.
About the job
Responsibilities

- Build and ship production systems, including CI/CD, testing, deployment infrastructure, and hardened versions of departmental prototypes.
- Own production support under a “you build it, you run it” model.
- Design for multi-tenant isolation, secrets management, audit logging, payload encryption, role-based access controls, and human-in-the-loop controls.
- Partner with Security Engineering on threat modeling, including prompt injection, tool misuse, and data exfiltration risks.
- Coach internal builders and develop production-readiness criteria, templates, SDKs, sandboxes, and developer experience.
- Partner with data analytics teams on source-of-truth datasets and pipelines.
- Translate stakeholder needs into scoped engineering problems and shipped systems.
- Establish standards for code quality, testing, evaluation, documentation, and on-call practices.
- Drive technical hiring, mentor engineers, and lead through influence.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building production systems.
- Strong systems design and integration fundamentals.
- Experience building internal tools, automation, and systems integrations used daily by colleagues.
- Experience integrating APIs, SaaS platforms, and internal services and operating the resulting systems in production.
- Understanding of balancing deterministic and non-deterministic capabilities in system architecture.
- Production experience with at least two of Python, TypeScript/Node.js, and Go.
- Practical experience applying large language models to workflows, with sound judgment about when they are appropriate.
- Experience taking a platform, function, or product area from zero to one and scaling it.
- Experience in regulated or security-sensitive environments.
- Understanding of enterprise security fundamentals, including encryption, access controls, audit logging, and secrets management.
- Ability to provide technical leadership without positional authority.
- Product-first approach and ability to ship quickly.
Nice to Have
- Experience with agentic systems, tool integration, state management, and evaluation.
- Experience developing internal developer platforms, SDKs, templates, or sandboxes.
- Experience with workflow orchestration and enterprise SaaS estates.
- Experience with threat modeling for AI-enabled systems.
