Senior Software Engineer - AI Initiative
Build foundational backend and platform infrastructure for AI agents, workflow automation, evaluations, and self-healing systems across Rippling’s enterprise products. The role requires a hands-on senior engineer with strong distributed-systems fundamentals, production ownership, and the ability to work through ambiguity.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Build foundational AI platform systems supporting Rippling’s AI strategy across HR, IT, Finance, payroll, benefits, recruiting, compliance, and internal workflows.
- Develop AI platform capabilities including background agents, automated workflows, evaluation systems, data pipelines, and model-quality feedback loops.
- Build systems that enable AI agents to automate enterprise workflows with appropriate permissions, controls, approvals, and auditability.
- Develop self-healing and self-improving workflow systems that detect negative product signals and help identify root causes.
- Partner with Staff Engineers, Product, Infra, Platform, and other engineering stakeholders to turn ambiguous problems into scalable technical solutions.
- Own components end-to-end, including design, implementation, testing, launch, monitoring, and iteration.
- Participate in design discussions, code reviews, debugging, production support, and operational improvements.
- Build reliable, scalable, maintainable backend and platform systems.
Requirements
- Senior-level backend or platform engineering experience with strong hands-on coding ability.
- Approximately 60% of time spent coding, debugging, reviewing code, and implementing solutions.
- Ability to independently own features, components, services, or workflows from design through production.
- Strong fundamentals in APIs, databases, system design, distributed systems, concurrency, and production debugging.
- Ability to deliver reliable, scalable, maintainable production systems.
- Strong execution across coding, testing, debugging, observability, and operational ownership.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Product, Infra, Platform, Staff Engineers, and other engineering stakeholders.
- Ability to ramp quickly into a new codebase, product context, and internal systems.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment with changing priorities and rapid iteration.
Nice to Have
- Curiosity and learning agility around AI agents, LLM infrastructure, automation systems, evaluation loops, and data/ML infrastructure.
- Experience with workflows, permissions, approvals, data quality, reliability, evaluations, or enterprise automation.
- Interest in growing toward Staff-level engineering scope and taking on increasingly ambiguous technical problems.
Compensation and Benefits
