Manager, Software Engineering
Leads and grows the Semantic Layer engineering team responsible for MetricFlow, setting technical direction, owning delivery, and stewarding an open-source project. Requires engineering management experience, production software expertise, and familiarity with SQL, analytical query systems, and compilation or transformation technologies.

Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and grow a team of software engineers building MetricFlow, including hiring, onboarding, career development, performance management, and day-to-day support.
- Own team delivery through planning, prioritization, execution, and predictable shipping of high-quality software.
- Partner with senior and staff engineers on technical direction across metric definitions, query compilation, dimensional modeling, and SQL generation for multiple data warehouses.
- Steward MetricFlow as an open-source project by triaging issues, reviewing external pull requests, managing releases, and engaging the community.
- Collaborate with engineering leaders across the dbt platform, dbt Core, and Semantic Layer service.
- Partner with product, design, and developer-relations teams to turn customer and community feedback into a roadmap.
- Drive performance, reliability, and observability of metric query execution at scale.
- Foster design documentation, thoughtful code review, and durable engineering practices.
Requirements
- Experience managing software engineering teams, including hiring, coaching, and performance management, with a record of shipping production systems.
- Strong software engineering foundation and experience building and shipping production software.
- Familiarity with SQL fundamentals, analytical query engines, data warehouses, parsing, compilation, transformation, query planners, DSL compilers, type systems, or rule-based engines.
- Understanding of clean APIs, modularity, testability, and backward compatibility.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience leading in a distributed, asynchronous team environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience leading or contributing to a popular open-source project and managing external contributors.
- Familiarity with dbt, MetricFlow, LookML, Cube, or other semantic-layer technologies.
- Background in data warehousing internals, query optimization, or analytical SQL dialects.
- Experience with CI/CD, GitHub Actions, and release engineering for Python libraries.
- Experience building developer-facing APIs, SDKs, or CLIs.
