Manager - Developer Productivity, AI Tools
Leads the team and platform responsible for Gusto’s agentic coding environments, AI code review, and supporting CI and security infrastructure. The role requires substantial engineering leadership experience, hands-on use of agentic coding tools, vendor-contract ownership, and strong judgment on AI autonomy, risk, and infrastructure spending.

Responsibilities
- Own the roadmap for agentic coding across interactive and autonomous modes, including Slack, web, CLI, and multi-step, multi-repository orchestration.
- Set the accuracy and coverage roadmap for AI code review, balancing review quality, pull-request merge speed, and inference cost using data.
- Define the security and risk posture for autonomous coding agents, including sandboxing, permission scoping, runtime isolation, secrets handling, and blast-radius containment.
- Establish and enforce AI infrastructure spending guardrails using usage data.
- Lead, recruit, mentor, and grow a team of senior engineers; run hiring loops and make calibration and leveling decisions.
- Partner with engineering leadership and the CTO on AI-native software development strategy.
Requirements
- 8+ years of engineering people leadership experience, including managing senior engineers through ambiguous and rapidly changing technical problems.
- Daily, hands-on experience with agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or equivalent.
- Experience owning a significant vendor or infrastructure contract from technical requirements through legal and procurement close.
- Ability to make autonomy and risk tradeoff decisions for AI systems, including prompt injection, credential exposure, and permission bypass risks.
- Experience leading across multiple ambiguous technical problem domains.
- Strong direct communication and experience briefing senior or executive stakeholders on strategy.
- Self-directed management style focused on removing roadblocks and setting direction.
Compensation and Benefits
- Cash compensation target: $240,000–$260,000 in Denver and most remote locations; $290,000–$305,000 in San Francisco and New York.
- Full-time employees receive base pay, benefits, and equity in the form of RSUs.
- Employees based in Denver, San Francisco, and New York offices are expected to work onsite approximately 2–3 days per week or more depending on the role.
