The Customer Engineer serves as a technical and commercial advisor across the full enterprise customer lifecycle, designing network and security architectures, guiding adoption, and driving expansion. Responsibilities
- Partner with Account Executives on technical discovery, requirements gathering, infrastructure mapping, technical validation, and proof-of-concept planning.
- Design Cloudflare architectures spanning DNS, CDN, Zero Trust, network security, Workers, and related solutions.
- Deliver technical presentations, architectural diagrams, demonstrations, and responses to technical and security objections.
- Define deployment strategies and oversee onboarding and implementation without directly executing the implementation.
- Create migration and onboarding blueprints, including DNS migrations, Zero Trust rollouts, and WAF tuning guidance.
- Own technical discovery, demos, onboarding, customer health, risk management, and expansion strategy with Account Executives.
- Monitor customer health scores and telemetry, resolve integration bottlenecks, reduce deployment risk, and drive time-to-value.
- Carry a variable quota tied to new business and/or account growth; identify cross-sell and upsell opportunities.
- Lead technical QBRs and communicate platform value and ROI to C-level stakeholders.
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor through onboarding, adoption, renewal, and expansion.
- Use AI agents, LLMs, and internal platforms to automate RFP responses, security questionnaires, sandbox provisioning, telemetry monitoring, and documentation.
- Create and deliver SOPs, architectural best practices, technical guides, workshops, code samples, and developer onboarding resources.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in a customer-facing technical role such as solutions engineering, customer engineering, professional services, sales engineering, technical account management, or forward-deployed engineering.
- Ability to design and clearly explain complex enterprise network and security architectures.
- Excellent communication, presentation, consultative, advisory, and stakeholder-management skills for both engineers and executives.
- Experience in a quota-carrying or revenue-aligned environment, with knowledge of SaaS metrics, business-value translation, and enterprise sales cycles.
- Depth in at least four of the following areas:
- Internet fundamentals, including OSI layers 1–7, BGP, GRE, TCP/UDP, DNS, HTTP(S), and SSL/TLS
- Internet security, including WAF, bot management, firewalls, rate limiting, mTLS, Zero Trust, and SASE
- Internet performance, including speed, latency, caching, video streaming, HTTP/2, and TLS 1.3
- AI proficiency, including prompt engineering, AI-assisted scripting, log analysis, LLMs, and workflow automation
- Coding and scripting for integrations, API connectors, and edge functions
- Developer platforms, including RESTful/GraphQL APIs, SDKs, webhooks, cloud-native tooling, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and observability
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience creating and delivering technical enablement, workshops, code samples, documentation, or developer onboarding.
- Experience with LLM orchestration, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and model-access controls.
- Knowledge of PCI DSS, HIPAA, and SOC 2.
- Experience in hyperscalers, digital-native companies, distributed-systems environments, or startups.
Compensation
- Competitive base salary with variable compensation tied to new business acquisition, adoption milestones, and account expansion.
- Travel of approximately 20–50% may be required.
