Design-first senior engineer who prototypes and implements product experiences in code, partners closely with front-end engineers, and maintains high design-system quality across products used by millions. Responsibilities
- Lead design engineering projects across DuckDuckGo products, including Duck.ai, native apps, and search.
- Prototype, specify, and implement product designs directly in code to ensure high-quality execution.
- Partner with front-end engineers as a peer, including contributing code and participating in pull-request reviews.
- Identify ambiguous problems, propose high-impact solutions, and independently lead projects from ideation through release.
- Develop tools and workflows that accelerate design and engineering while maintaining design-system quality and consistency.
- Improve products through concept exploration, experimentation, and research.
- Define project goals, rationale, success metrics, and creative briefs.
- Instrument work and use qualitative and quantitative data to guide decisions.
- Help shape the design engineering discipline and role.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in product design and/or design engineering, including 2+ years in senior-level design positions at significant global consumer brands.
- Strong ability to communicate visual and interaction recommendations through mockups, prototypes, and rationale.
- Comfortable collaborating with engineers as a peer, reasoning through decisions in pull-request reviews, and contributing production code.
- Ability to prototype to production standard using semantic markup and accessibility best practices.
- Fluency in motion and interaction implementation, including easing curves, spring physics, and interruptible transitions.
- Experience structuring design systems with token layering, primitive and semantic naming, and parity between design source and code.
- Strong project management skills across proposal, execution, and release.
- Ability to apply agentic solutions to project management and design execution workflows.
- Experience writing creative briefs and defining success metrics.
- Proficiency in research, experimentation, and measurement.
- Ability to take initiative, work with urgency and discretion, and collaborate transparently.
Compensation and Benefits
- $178,500 USD annually.

- Flexible work arrangement with no core hours and an average full-time commitment of 40 hours per week.
