Designs and evolves Gusto’s Workbench product design system, including components, tokens, documentation, and AI-assisted tooling. The role requires extensive product design and design-systems experience, strong technical collaboration, Figma expertise, and fluency with AI workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain Workbench components and patterns, including complex components with variables, variants, and tokenized styles.
  • Own and evolve semantic and functional token architecture during the Brand Refresh and transition toward theming.
  • Partner with engineering on component consistency, design decisions, implementation reviews, technical plans, and pull requests.
  • Contribute to AI tooling that helps designers and engineers use Workbench correctly, including structured documentation, Storybook examples, and content legible to large language models.
  • Support product designers and engineers through office hours, Slack, and asynchronous review.
  • Document and publish design decisions, usage guidance, and component rationale.
  • Participate in decisions about component architecture, naming conventions, and migration strategy.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience on a product design systems team across design, implementation, documentation, and adoption.
  • Experience with token architecture and component API design.
  • 7+ years of experience on a product design team.
  • Meaningful experience using AI tools such as Claude, Copilot, or similar in daily workflows.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering and contribute to implementation decisions and code repositories.
  • Solid understanding of WCAG AA guidelines and accessibility-driven component and token decisions.
  • Expert knowledge of AI design tools and Figma, including complex component construction, variables, tokens, and prototyping.
  • Basic GitHub proficiency.
  • Strong design craft, polish, and judgment in design-system work.
  • Excellent documentation, communication, education, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with LLM-readable documentation, MCP servers, or AI-assisted design tooling.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Cash compensation ranges from $147,000 to $215,000 per year in Denver and from $178,000 to $253,000 per year in San Francisco and New York.
  • Full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).
  • Employees based in Denver, San Francisco, and New York work from the office approximately 2–3 days per week or more depending on the role.
  • A secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required when working from an approved non-office location.
