Senior Backend Engineer - Databases - Loki Query
Build, operate, and maintain reliable backend systems for Grafana’s Loki query and telemetry database services. The role requires software development and cloud or systems engineering experience, with Go, Kubernetes, distributed systems, and operational experience valued.

Responsibilities
- Influence the roadmap and career objectives.
- Deliver new features, then iterate and improve based on results.
- Drive projects from ideation through customer-facing operations.
- Contribute to open-source projects beyond the team’s direct scope.
- Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, owning reliability, performance, and availability.
- Participate in on-call rotations and own the services you run.
- Support teammates, participate in design discussions, and collaborate effectively.
- Develop a deep understanding of the cloud product, customers, and large distributed-system codebase.
- Work independently and communicate effectively in a remote-first engineering organization.
Requirements
- Solid experience with at least one programming language; Go experience is useful, while Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar experience translates well.
- Experience delivering projects from requirements gathering and ideation through shipping to customers.
- Experience developing cloud-based software or working in systems engineering.
- Experience writing clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
- Self-directed, action-oriented, customer-focused, pragmatic, collaborative, and strong in communication.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with Kubernetes and/or Docker.
- Experience using Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles, including on-call or homelab projects.
- Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems.
- Familiarity with on-call work, operations/SRE tasks, or infrastructure as code.
Compensation and Benefits
- UK base compensation: £91,000–£114,000.
- Equity, bonus where applicable, and other benefits.
- 100% remote global culture.
- 30 days of annual leave per year, including three Grafana shutdown days, subject to local legislation.
