Principal Software Engineer - Cloud Services

Leads the architecture and delivery of highly available, cloud-native backend services across AWS and Azure. The role requires deep Python and distributed-systems experience, hands-on serverless or container development, and technical leadership without direct people management.

Responsibilities

Own the architecture and implementation of major service components within UniFS-as-a-Service.
Lead multi-developer feature initiatives without direct reports.
Make technical decisions affecting system reliability, scalability, and security.
Collaborate with Product, QA, Support, and Documentation.
Mentor engineers on design quality, production readiness, and cloud best practices.
Drive improvements in CI/CD, observability, and operational excellence.
Participate in root cause analysis and implement preventative measures for critical incidents.
Design and implement cloud-native services using AWS and Azure serverless technologies.
Lead architectural discussions and translate requirements into scalable technical designs.
Develop production-grade Python services using FastAPI and Pydantic.
Integrate with AWS Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, SQS, and Kinesis, as well as Azure Container Apps, Blob Storage, Cosmos DB, Service Bus, and Event Hubs.
Author automated tests using pytest or equivalent frameworks.
Improve CI/CD pipelines and containerized deployment workflows using Docker.
Implement infrastructure as code using AWS CDK and/or Azure Bicep.
Ensure internet-facing services meet modern security, reliability, and observability standards.
Lead production incident response, root cause analysis, and long-term reliability improvements.

Requirements

9+ years of professional software development experience.
7+ years of production Python development.
Experience designing and operating distributed, cloud-based systems in AWS or Azure.
Hands-on experience building serverless or container-based cloud services.
Experience integrating with cloud SDKs such as boto3 or azure-sdk-for-python.
Experience building RESTful services using modern Python frameworks such as FastAPI.
Experience writing automated tests in production environments, such as pytest.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines and containerized deployments using Docker.
Strong understanding of reliability, observability, and security best practices for internet-facing systems.

Nice-to-Haves

Experience working across both AWS and Azure environments.
Experience with infrastructure as code, including CDK, Bicep, or Terraform.
Experience designing multi-tenant SaaS systems.
Experience in storage systems or large-scale data platforms.
AWS or Azure certifications.
Experience leading architecture for services handling high-throughput or large-scale enterprise workloads.
Experience operating globally distributed systems.
Strong incident management and postmortem leadership experience.
