Engineering Manager, Product Platform
Lead a senior autonomous engineering squad building and scaling Virta's core Product Platform services including communications, workflow engine, and AI platform. Drive platform adoption, SDLC innovation with AI-native tools, and technical strategy while coaching engineers toward Staff/Principal levels.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Platform Adoption & Cross-team Orchestration: Partner with EMs across Virta to proactively solve their delivery friction, establish structured feedback loops with product teams, and align on win-win adoption strategies that drive capability utilization without sacrificing product timelines.
- Software Development Life Cycle Innovation & Operational Excellence: Drive continuous process optimization with a specific focus on AI-native development. Partner with the team to safely experiment with agentic coding tools, reducing development toil and improving cycle times while preserving team expertise, technical skills, judgment, and domain knowledge.
- Technical Strategy & Platform Vision: Own the technical strategic vision for Virta’s core platform capabilities. Partner with product and engineering leaders to ensure the architecture scales to meet future business goals, balancing quick-win acceleration bets with long-term investments.
- Team Execution & Decision Facilitation: Lead and support a senior-leaning, autonomous squad, fostering a high-ownership environment built on trust. Act as a strategic facilitator and decisive tie-breaker when senior team members face complex technical decisions.
- Career Development & Growth: Focus deeply on senior talent development. Create growth paths that challenge experienced engineers to scale their impact from "problem solvers" to "system thinkers," coaching them on navigating organizational influence and progressing toward Staff/Principal levels.
Requirements
- 3+ years leading senior, autonomous engineering teams, with a proven track record of building frameworks, shared platforms, or cross-team services.
- Strong influencing skills. Encourages adoption of centralized frameworks or shared services across disparate teams without direct authority.
- Experience aligning platform timelines with product roadmaps, strategically timing deliveries to maximize engineering leverage and minimize cross-team friction.
- Technical fluency in platform, product infrastructure, or distributed systems contexts.
- Interprets team delivery and health metrics to uncover opportunities for improvement, distinguishing when a metric requires active intervention versus when to simply monitor.
- Translates high-level company OKRs/KPIs into strategy, helping the team understand how their work directly drives business growth.
- Builds collaborative, high-performing teams in a fully remote or highly asynchronous environment.
Nice-to-Haves
- 5+ years leading a Platform, Infrastructure, or Developer Experience team, where internal engineering squads were your primary customers.
- Experience pioneering or integrating AI-assisted/Agentic coding workflows into a team's software development lifecycle to accelerate delivery.
- Deep architectural familiarity with Event-Driven Architectures (EDA) and distributed systems.
- Hands-on engineering background in building highly scalable communication, workflow orchestration, or rules engines.
- Familiarity working in a regulated industry, particularly healthcare (HIPAA compliance, digital health tech).
