Senior/Staff Software Engineer - Edge

The engineer will architect and troubleshoot edge devices and cloud systems, build remote diagnostics, and solve complex problems across hardware, networking, and software. The role requires deep systems experience, strong programming fundamentals, and technical leadership in ambiguous environments.

Responsibilities

  • Shape the architecture of edge devices deployed in the physical world and the cloud systems that orchestrate, monitor, and update them.
  • Solve ambiguous systems problems involving resident location modeling, fall detection, and sensor fusion.
  • Build diagnostic tooling for hardware deployed remotely.
  • Troubleshoot field failures across networking, hardware, and software.
  • Collaborate with other teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.
  • Review code, lead design discussions, and mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Challenge existing approaches and advocate for better solutions.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional experience building and maintaining complex backend systems; depth and range of systems experience are valued over a specific number of years.
  • Strong Linux/Unix systems knowledge.
  • Deep expertise in at least one programming language, such as Java, C++, Rust, Go, Python, or C#.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, including memory, concurrency, and performance.
  • Working knowledge of networking and distributed systems.
  • Demonstrated curiosity through side projects, open-source contributions, home labs, technical hobbies, or self-directed learning.
  • Experience leading technical efforts from ambiguous problems to delivered outcomes and making tradeoffs under uncertainty.

Nice-to-haves

  • Strong, well-reasoned opinions about tools and technologies.
  • RF communications or hands-on hardware/embedded experience.
  • Experience customizing Linux distributions for commercial deployment.
  • Experience designing edge and cloud systems, including OTA updates and fleet management.
  • Familiarity with AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Expected annual salary: $175,000-$230,000 USD, depending on expertise, experience, and interview performance.
