Staff Software Engineer, Accounts & Ledgering
Staff Software Engineer owning the immutable, event-oriented accounts and ledgering system for Commure's AI-native RCM platform. Design derived balances, posting engines, bank reconciliation, reporting, and drift detection for high-stakes healthcare financial workflows. Requires 8+ years experience, strong backend and relational DB skills, and prior financial systems work.
About the job
What You’ll Do
- Design the next-generation account and ledger model with immutable events, derived balances, clear semantics for payer vs patient balances vs adjustments vs cash, and invariants preventing errors like "printing money".
- Keep operational balances and financial reports in lockstep with drift detection and self-healing.
- Reconcile multiple sources of truth: billed charges, payer remittances, bank deposits, and financial reports; surface discrepancies proactively.
- Scale idempotent, explainable posting and adjustment pipelines for high transaction volumes using negation/reversal semantics.
- Operate money-critical systems on large Postgres tables, including safe migrations, trigger-driven projections, backfills, observability, and incident response (eventual consistency not acceptable).
- Set the bar for observability and operational readiness: monitoring, logging, distributed tracing, dashboards, alerting, SLOs, safe production rollouts.
- Work with platform and product teams to protect sensitive customer data, tighten security boundaries, and meet regulatory/compliance obligations.
- Own complex cross-system initiatives end-to-end: architecture, implementation, migration, rollout, and production operations.
- Make pragmatic tradeoffs weighing security, correctness, reliability, performance, simplicity against speed of delivery.
- Mentor Senior and Staff engineers; run architecture and design reviews; raise the technical bar through direction, habits, and feedback.
- Take ownership in a fast-moving environment: spot systemic risks early and fix root causes.
What You Have
- 8+ years building software with a track record of Staff-level work, architecture ownership, mentoring, and cross-team influence.
- Strong backend engineering (Python preferred) and deep experience with relational databases at scale: query performance, ACID transactions, safe migrations, data integrity.
- Real experience designing or operating financial systems (payments, billing, reconciliation, accounting, or ledgers). Understand double-entry accounting, append-only ledgers, idempotency, reversals, and deriving balances from immutable history.
- Shipped production systems with observability, alerting, and incident response for high-stakes workflows.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially with ops and customers when correctness is critical.
Bonus Points
- Healthcare RCM, patient accounting, insurance remittance (835/ERA), AR aging, or practice-management billing.
- File-based integrations, bank reconciliation, event-sourced/CDC architectures, or high-throughput batch pipelines.
- Experience evolving a monolith toward clearer domain boundaries or event-oriented models.
Skills
Python, Postgres, Acid Transactions, Double-Entry Accounting, Append-Only Ledgers, Idempotency, Event Sourcing, Observability, Distributed Tracing, SLOs, Bank Reconciliation, Financial Reconciliation, Ar Aging
