Senior Software Engineer, Control Plane
Build and operate Java-based control plane services unifying Starburst’s SaaS and self-managed products across cloud, on-premise, and air-gapped environments. The role requires distributed systems experience, cloud infrastructure expertise, and ownership of reliable backend services.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain control plane services shared by Starburst Enterprise, Starburst Galaxy, and Trino.
- Contribute to a unified control plane spanning access control, multi-cluster management, routing, catalog management, and observability.
- Own the reliability, scalability, performance, and efficiency of provisioning and upgrading APIs, cluster lifecycle management, and operational tooling.
- Build services for multi-tenant SaaS, self-managed, on-premise, and air-gapped deployments across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
- Review pull requests and design proposals.
- Improve engineering processes, tests, systems, and team productivity.
- Collaborate with globally distributed engineering teams.
- Provide support for internal and external customers.
- Periodically assist with React and TypeScript-based portal UI work.
Requirements
- Prior experience developing distributed systems.
- Extensive software development experience with Java.
- Cloud infrastructure architecture and orchestration experience with at least one major cloud provider.
- Experience building and operating backend services, APIs, control loops, and lifecycle management systems.
- Hands-on use of AI coding tools and agents in daily engineering work.
- Experience with software engineering and design best practices.
- Ability to build maintainable, performant, high-quality software.
- Comfort with autonomy, ownership, and a globally distributed team environment.
- Strong written communication skills.
