Director, Forward Deployed Engineering

Responsibilities

• Manage a team of five forward deployed engineers, including coaching, performance management, hiring, and resourcing across accounts.
• Own the technical approach for customer deployments, including architecture and prioritization decisions.
• Serve as the senior technical voice with customer leadership from kickoff through escalation.
• Partner with Viam leadership on account direction and communicate progress, risks, and blockers.
• Drive deployments to production by managing schedules, removing blockers, and adapting approaches to site requirements.
• Translate field learnings into platform priorities with Product and Engineering.

Requirements

• Experience managing engineers who deploy software in customer environments.
• Deep systems experience and the ability to become fluent in unfamiliar platforms quickly.
• Ability to review designs and read code, despite limited day-to-day coding.
• Experience with systems integration, SDKs, and edge/cloud architectures, including unreliable networks and hardware.
• Track record working with enterprise customers and communicating credibly with their leadership.
• Strong judgment with incomplete information and ownership of outcomes.
• Experience creating structure in bespoke, rapidly evolving environments.
• Willingness to balance individual customer urgency with scalable portfolio solutions.
• Comfort working around hardware and physical systems.

Nice-to-haves

• Robotics or IoT experience is not required.

Compensation and Benefits

• Base salary: $225,000–$275,000 per year.
