Director, Forward Deployed Engineering
Leads a team of forward deployed engineers responsible for architecting and delivering customer software deployments into production. The role requires engineering management experience, strong systems and edge/cloud architecture judgment, and credibility with enterprise customer leadership.

Responsibilities
- Manage a team of five forward deployed engineers, including coaching, performance management, hiring, and resourcing across accounts.
- Own the technical approach for customer deployments, including architecture and prioritization decisions.
- Serve as the senior technical voice with customer leadership from kickoff through escalation.
- Partner with Viam leadership on account direction and communicate progress, risks, and blockers.
- Drive deployments to production by managing schedules, removing blockers, and adapting approaches to site requirements.
- Translate field learnings into platform priorities with Product and Engineering.
Requirements
- Experience managing engineers who deploy software in customer environments.
- Deep systems experience and the ability to become fluent in unfamiliar platforms quickly.
- Ability to review designs and read code, despite limited day-to-day coding.
- Experience with systems integration, SDKs, and edge/cloud architectures, including unreliable networks and hardware.
- Track record working with enterprise customers and communicating credibly with their leadership.
- Strong judgment with incomplete information and ownership of outcomes.
- Experience creating structure in bespoke, rapidly evolving environments.
- Willingness to balance individual customer urgency with scalable portfolio solutions.
- Comfort working around hardware and physical systems.

- Robotics or IoT experience is not required.

- Base salary: $225,000–$275,000 per year.
