Backend Engineer , AI Engineering: Agent Observability
Builds and maintains Ruby on Rails backend features for GitLab’s Agent Observability and AI gateway, including APIs, testing, data models, and production resiliency. The role requires backend application experience, SQL and PostgreSQL proficiency, and practical daily use of AI tooling.

Responsibilities
- Develop, ship, and maintain secure, well-tested, and performant features and improvements for Agent Observability and Interactions across the GitLab monolith backend and AI gateway.
- Collaborate with Product Management, UX, frontend, backend, and AI specialists to refine requirements and deliver iterative product enhancements.
- Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs and related backend logic, ensuring reliability, scalability, and clear contracts with frontend clients.
- Improve and extend automated testing, including RSpec and other frameworks.
- Share standards, patterns, and learnings with other engineers to support responsible AI integration and evidence-driven engineering.
- Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve observability and resiliency.
Requirements
- Experience building and maintaining production applications with Ruby on Rails, including background jobs, APIs, and data models.
- Comfort working across the stack in a mature codebase.
- Proficiency designing or extending REST and/or GraphQL APIs with attention to scalability, maintainability, and backward compatibility.
- Practical experience working with AI tooling daily.
- SQL skills and familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including efficient queries and data modeling.
- Openness to learning, collaboration, and working in an async-first, distributed environment.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including technical proposals and documentation.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with Python backends and/or Vue frontends.
- Experience designing and shipping AI-powered backend features and integrations.
