Intermediate Backend Engineer

Build and operate production backend features, APIs, integrations, and services for a large-scale DevSecOps platform. The role requires professional backend development experience, strong database and testing fundamentals, independent feature ownership, and clear asynchronous communication.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, and ship backend features and improvements with minimal guidance.
  • Build maintainable, secure, observable, and performant production code.
  • Design and maintain APIs, background jobs, integrations, and bounded services.
  • Work with data models, migrations, indexes, and query behavior.
  • Add and improve unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end test coverage.
  • Review code for correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and operational risk.
  • Investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures.
  • Identify technical debt and propose practical improvements.
  • Participate in on-call or operational support as required.
  • Use AI coding tools productively and validate their output.

Requirements

  • Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications.
  • Strong programming, API, database, testing, debugging, and performance fundamentals.
  • Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or another modern backend language.
  • Ability to own features from clarification through delivery and follow-up.
  • Sound judgment regarding security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational risk.
  • Understanding of modular backend boundaries and coupling.
  • Strong written communication and effective collaboration in a remote, asynchronous environment.
  • Practical experience with AI coding tools, including reviewing and correcting generated code.

Nice-to-haves

  • Production Go services, APIs, concurrency, profiling, or gRPC.
  • Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, or cloud deployment.
  • Rust, particularly for systems, security, performance, or platform work.
  • PostgreSQL, schema evolution, caching, queues, messaging, or event-driven workflows.
  • Observability using metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerts.
  • Experience contributing to a modular monolith, bounded context, shared component, or independently operated service.

Compensation

  • United States base salary: $115,200–$194,400 USD.
