Responsibilities
- Partner with aerospace, software, and systems engineers to create accurate technical documentation for advanced aircraft systems.
- Manage documentation across development, flight-test, and operational phases.
- Translate avionics, autonomy, and mission-system concepts into guidance for operators, maintainers, and internal teams.
- Research system architectures, design specifications, interface control documents, software descriptions, and test procedures.
- Develop and maintain service bulletins, aircraft operating procedures, maintenance manuals, troubleshooting guides, training materials, and mission documentation.
- Review and edit content for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and program standards.
- Create system diagrams, workflows, illustrations, and annotated graphics.
- Identify documentation gaps and resolve missing, ambiguous, or conflicting technical information with engineering teams.
- Maintain documentation standards, templates, and version control.
- Update documentation based on flight-test results, system changes, and operational feedback.
Requirements
- 3–10 years of technical writing or editing experience, preferably in aerospace, defense, or complex engineering systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, Engineering, English, or a related field.
- Experience documenting aircraft systems, complex hardware/software platforms, or similar domains.
- Experience working directly with engineers and subject-matter experts to extract technical information.
- Strong understanding of structured documentation practices and lifecycle documentation management.
- Excellent writing, editing, organizational, and technical-information synthesis skills.
- Ability to produce clear, precise, user-focused documentation and manage competing priorities under tight timelines.
- Strong attention to detail and consistency across large documentation sets.
- Ability to work across distributed teams and time zones.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with advanced aircraft systems, UAVs, autonomy, avionics, or mission systems documentation.
- Familiarity with DoD technical manual standards, including MIL-STD, S1000D, or service-specific formats.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe FrameMaker, or XML-based authoring tools.
- Flight-test documentation or operational-procedure development experience.
- Defense industry or aerospace program experience.
- Master’s degree in English, Technical Communication, or a related discipline.
- Project management experience supporting complex technical programs.
- Experience using AI-assisted tools in documentation workflows.
Compensation
- Annual salary: $60,000–$105,000.
