Responsibilities
- Shape Upstart’s design system, including component architecture, token strategy, and visual language.
- Define platform strategy across web and native mobile, balancing shared foundations with distinct experiences.
- Develop AI-enabled design-system workflows, machine-readable standards, and design-to-code tools.
- Define impact metrics and use data to guide priorities and build leadership support.
- Establish ownership, governance, and contribution models across platform and product teams.
- Develop two senior designers as leaders and builders through context, feedback, and coaching.
- Partner with engineering and product design leaders to make the Design Platform the foundation for moving products from idea to production.
Requirements
- 8+ years of product design experience, including 2+ years of direct people management.
- Experience building or substantially scaling a design system adopted across multiple product teams.
- Experience defining design patterns or platform strategy across web and native mobile.
- Experience owning components, tokens, documentation, governance, and visual design direction.
- Experience partnering with engineering on design-system implementation, including component APIs and token architecture.
Nice-to-haves
- Ability to prototype or contribute to component implementation.
- Experience with AI-assisted design, prototyping, build tooling, or design-to-code workflows.
- Knowledge of multi-platform theming and native mobile design systems across iOS and Android.
- Analytical skills for measuring impact and informing decisions.
- Business judgment for prioritization, tradeoffs, and leadership alignment.
- Experience developing senior individual contributors and facilitating design critique.
Compensation and benefits
- United States anticipated base salary: $198,700–$275,000 USD.
- Canada anticipated base salary: $182,800–$230,000 CAD.
