Staff Design Engineer
Staff Design Engineer at Mixpanel leading transformation of the design system into AI-native infrastructure. Build token systems, components, and AI-powered prototyping tools while bridging design and engineering with production code contributions. Requires 8+ years experience, strong React/TS skills, design sensibility, and fluency in AI design workflows.
About the job
What you'll do
- Build the infrastructure for an AI-native design practice: Translate design standards into systems (token system, component library, documentation, guidelines) that AI agents, coding tools, and prototyping workflows can build on. Evolve the design system into foundational infrastructure for AI-assisted workflows.
- Shape how Mixpanel looks and behaves in an AI-native world: Collaborate on reimagining the product for conversational, agentic, and adaptive interfaces using deep design sensibility and production engineering skills.
- Own the bridge between design and code: Build systems to keep design and code in sync, define "shippable" standards as AI writes more code, work directly in the codebase, ship PRs, and make design a force multiplier.
- Stand up prototyping and AI tooling infrastructure: Build workflows, tools, and infrastructure for high-fidelity prototyping with working code and real components. Identify handoff gaps and build AI-powered workflows to close them.
- Set and model the craft bar: Establish quality standards through shipped work, enable designers to work code-adjacent and engineers to use better components, and integrate latest AI-assisted workflows responsibly.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in modern front-end frameworks: React, TypeScript, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, Next.js
- Experience with design systems (built or overhauled one at scale)
- Strong design sensibility with focus on craft, consistency, interaction quality, and taste
- Fluency in AI-assisted workflows: canvas-to-code, code-to-canvas, AI prototyping tools, MCP integrations, and emerging tools
- Experience with Figma, Storybook, VSCode, Chromatic, and GitHub
- Track record of working across design and engineering
- High autonomy in setting direction, influencing standards, and managing complex projects
- 8+ years in design engineering, UX engineering, design technology, or related hybrid role
Bonus points
- Experience designing or building data visualizations
- Background in brand and/or product design
- Experience with accessibility (WCAG 2.2, ARIA patterns, semantic HTML, APCA, accessible data viz)
- Experience working in a product analytics or developer-focused product environment
Compensation
Total target cash compensation (TTCC) range: $236000—$300000 USD (includes base and variable compensation). Eligible for equity and benefits including medical, vision, dental, mental wellness, generous vacation, parental leave, and more.
Skills
React, TypeScript, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, Next.js, Figma, Storybook, Design Systems, Ai-Assisted Workflows, Accessibility
