Staff Software Engineer, Lyft Business

Responsibilities

  • Shape the long-term architecture for systems, balancing short-term functionality with long-term health.
  • Translate business goals into actionable engineering projects and own the technical roadmap from conception through delivery.
  • Manage cross-team dependencies, mitigate risks, and drive alignment across product, design, and operations.
  • Improve system observability, performance, and technical-debt reduction.
  • Establish deployment, alerting, and on-call best practices; own platform stability and build preventive safeguards.
  • Resolve bottlenecks and make trade-offs that protect system architecture.
  • Mentor engineers, delegate stretch opportunities, lead cross-team reviews, and promote technical excellence.
  • Participate in high-bar interviewing and the broader internal engineering community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a record of technical leadership and system ownership.
  • Deep expertise designing, debugging, and operating fault-tolerant, highly available, large-scale distributed systems.
  • Experience driving technical roadmaps, managing cross-team dependencies, and influencing system architecture at an organizational level.
  • Knowledge of distributed systems, relational databases, and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with public cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with container orchestration and related technologies such as Kubernetes, Docker, or cri-o.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Low-ego, collaborative, and cross-functional working style.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base pay range for the San Francisco area: $176,000–$220,000 annually, excluding potential equity, bonus, and benefits.
