Senior Robotics Design Engineer: Government Projects
Design and integrate six-axis robotic manufacturing cells, transporters, and end-of-arm tooling for government projects. The role requires expert SolidWorks skills, structural validation experience, production-focused robotics integration, and at least five years of relevant experience.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Own robotic manufacturing cell design end to end, collaborating with software and mechatronics teams to optimize reachability, cycle time, and efficiency.
- Design and iterate six-axis industrial robot hardware, including robot transporter mechanisms, motion systems, and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT).
- Build 3D CAD assemblies and develop manufacturing-ready 2D drawings using SolidWorks.
- Perform structural analysis and simulation to validate design integrity before deployment.
- Prototype hardware with design for manufacturability (DFM) in mind, using 3D printers and CNC machines.
- Lead mechanical risk assessments and ensure designs comply with ISO 10218-1/-2, ISO/TR 20218-1, and ANSI/A3 R15.06 safety standards.
- Select electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic hardware components and maintain accurate bills of materials in PDM.
- Manage external machine shops and component suppliers to protect part quality, lead time, and cost.
- Mentor junior engineers and travel to customer sites as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 5+ years of robotic system design and integration experience, primarily with six-axis industrial robots.
- Experience designing 6DOF robot automation systems, including reach and layout studies and EOAT design.
- Expert-level SolidWorks experience with 3D solid modeling, analysis, and 2D manufacturing drawings.
- Familiarity with motion control systems, robotics programming, and industrial facilities and equipment.
- Ability to solve technical problems independently and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Willingness to travel to customer sites.
- Must satisfy applicable United States export-control and ongoing work-authorization requirements.
Nice-to-haves
- 10+ years of robotic system design and integration experience.
- Industrial robot transporter design using Preston-Eastin or Güdel tracks.
- Sensor integration and calibration, including 3D vision systems.
- Manufacturing, industrial automation, process development, or manufacturing engineering experience.
- Programming six-axis robots for sanding, grinding, blasting, or other surface-finishing applications.
- Defense or government industry experience.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual salary range of $140,000–$175,000 USD.
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
- Unlimited PTO.
- 401(k) plan with employer match.
- Regular offsite events and a discretionary productivity fund.
