Responsibilities
Address employee concerns and workplace conflicts through investigations, disciplinary action plans, and mediated conversations.
Coach and support managers on performance expectations, feedback, development needs, performance management plans, and offboarding.
Maintain current knowledge of HR regulations and ensure adherence to Gusto policies and legal requirements.
Partner with Legal and People Partners on escalated employee issues, organizational risk, and appropriate courses of action.
Navigate ambiguous, high-stakes employee situations while balancing employee experience with business and legal risk.
Maintain thorough, legally defensible documentation for employee relations cases.
Identify patterns across cases and surface systemic risks to People leadership.
Use AI tools appropriately to synthesize information, identify patterns, draft communications, and reduce administrative work while protecting sensitive employee information.
Requirements
At least 4 years of experience in an HR Generalist role, or 2 years in an Employee Relations or HR Business Partner role, separate from other HR-related experience.
Experience handling complex and sensitive employee relations matters with discretion, sound judgment, and composure.
Ability to balance multiple stakeholder interests while maintaining fairness and equity.
Experience collaborating with Legal teams on escalated employee issues.
Strong knowledge of HR best practices, employment laws, and industry trends.
Strong coaching and mentoring skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Analytical skills to interpret employee relations metrics and propose actionable insights.
Nice to Have
Formal education or training in interpersonal communication, facilitated conversations, mediation, nonviolent communication, counseling, or coaching.
Experience working in a globally distributed company.
Compensation and Benefits
Denver cash compensation: $88,000–$98,000 per year.
San Francisco and New York cash compensation: $105,000–$118,000 per year.
Full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity in the form of RSUs.
Employees based in Denver, San Francisco, and New York offices generally work onsite approximately 2–3 days per week or more depending on the role.
