Intermediate Backend Engineer
Build and operate production backend features, APIs, integrations, and services while collaborating asynchronously across product and engineering teams. The role requires strong backend fundamentals, independent feature ownership, and practical experience with modern backend languages and AI coding tools.

Responsibilities
- Design, implement, test, and ship backend features and improvements with minimal guidance.
- Build maintainable, secure, observable, and performant production code.
- Design and maintain APIs, background jobs, integrations, and bounded services.
- Work with data models, migrations, indexes, and query behavior.
- Add and improve automated unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end test coverage.
- Review code for correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and operational risk.
- Investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures.
- Identify technical debt and propose practical improvements.
- Participate in on-call or operational support as required.
- Use AI coding tools productively, validating and correcting generated output.
- Collaborate asynchronously with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, Security, and design partners.
Requirements
- Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications.
- Strong programming, API, database, testing, debugging, and performance fundamentals.
- Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or another modern backend language, with the ability to learn and adapt.
- Ability to own features from clarification through delivery and follow-up.
- Sound judgment regarding security, reliability, performance, maintainability, modular boundaries, coupling, and operational risk.
- Strong written communication and effective collaboration in a remote, asynchronous environment.
- Practical experience with AI coding tools and reviewing their output.
Nice-to-haves
- Production Go services, APIs, concurrency, profiling, or gRPC.
- Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, or cloud deployment.
- Rust for systems, security, performance, or platform work.
- PostgreSQL, schema evolution, caching, queues, messaging, or event-driven workflows.
- Observability with metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerts.
- Experience contributing to a modular monolith, bounded context, shared component, or independently operated service.
