Staff Mechatronics Engineer
Leads mechatronic architecture and system integration for high-precision robotic manufacturing machines, from prototyping through production. Requires 8+ years of machine-building experience, advanced robotics and motion-control expertise, and an engineering degree.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Own the mechatronic architecture for a family of special-purpose manufacturing machines, including actuation, sensing, motion control, build-versus-buy decisions, and subsystem partitioning.
- Architect and integrate precision robotic hardware, actuators, sensors, and electromechanical subsystems for micron-level manufacturing reliability.
- Apply additive manufacturing and subtractive processes, including 3D printing, milling, grinding, and polishing, to high-precision machine design.
- Establish design and validation standards, including design reviews, tolerance and error-budget analysis, FMEA, and test and validation practices.
- Lead rapid prototyping, structural and thermal analysis, performance testing, and failure-mode analysis.
- Integrate mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software systems and optimize system dynamics.
- Provide technical direction for the long-term automation roadmap, mentor engineers, and influence cross-functional teams.
- Travel approximately 20% to suppliers, manufacturing sites, and testing facilities.
Requirements
- 8+ years of machine-building experience in hardware, mechatronics, or robotics engineering, focused on system-level architecture for production systems.
- Experience architecting at least one complex electromechanical system from concept through production ramp, including addressing field issues and implementing improvements.
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Robotics Engineering.
- Technical leadership without formal authority, including setting direction across teams and mentoring engineers.
- Expert proficiency with 3D CAD modeling and broad fabrication and manufacturing processes.
- Expert knowledge of robotic kinematics, dynamics, actuation systems, and simulation tools.
- Hands-on experience with sensor integration, embedded systems, and manufacturing design execution.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, self-management, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience as a systems or mechanical engineer at an automation system integrator or OEM delivering turnkey automated solutions.
- Waveform tuning, custom PLC programming with Beckhoff/TwinCAT, or high-performance motion controllers such as ACS or Elmo.
- Laser interferometry, high-resolution optical encoders, and sub-micron calibration techniques.
- Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) and 3D vision system integration.
- Advanced FEA/CFD for thermal and vibration analysis of high-speed robotic linkages and spindles.
- Design or qualification of brushless motors, linear actuators, or robotic end-effectors.
- Knowledge of ISO 10218 or ISO 13482 robotic safety standards.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual salary range: $183,600–$222,500.
- Benefits may include healthcare, dental, mental health support, parental planning resources, retirement savings options, and paid time off.
