Staff Application Engineer

Leads complex customer application programs from concept through production readiness for Carbon’s additive manufacturing technology. Requires 8+ years in product development or design, strong CAD/CAE and computational design skills, manufacturing expertise, and cross-functional leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Educate and influence customers on Design for DLS best practices and design for manufacturability, including printer operation, materials, design guidelines, software, and post-processing.
  • Guide customers through design, aesthetic, and technical tradeoffs involving cost and manufacturability.
  • Lead application development and optimization across design, file preparation, printing, post-processing, finishing, and quality/validation.
  • Manage customer benchmarks, prototypes, bridge applications, and production applications from concept through production readiness.
  • Own technical outcomes, timelines, milestones, risk mitigation, and technical strategy for assigned applications.
  • Evaluate product-market fit, technical readiness, cost-model viability, scalability, and operational risk; provide recommendations to sales and leadership.
  • Translate customer requirements into actionable input for Software, Product, Materials, and Hardware teams, and validate solutions.
  • Define test methods, evaluate solutions, iterate on feedback, and make recommendations using hypothesis-driven approaches.
  • Create requirements, statements of work, standard operating procedures, decision logs, workflows, templates, and checklists.
  • Mentor and coach Application Engineers through design reviews and informal training.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to tools, workflows, and processes.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, focused on product development or product design.
  • 8+ years of product development or product design experience, including shipping products from concept through production readiness.
  • Strong proficiency with CAD and CAE software such as SolidWorks, NX, CATIA, Magics, Rhino, and Grasshopper.
  • Working knowledge of Carbon’s Design Engine or similar lattice design software, including defining and debugging repeatable workflows.
  • Experience with Python, Grasshopper, visual coding, scripting, computational design, and automation of design-to-production workflows.
  • Working knowledge of FEA, structural loading, and plastic material properties.
  • Familiarity with injection molding, urethane casting, CNC machining, design for manufacturing, and physical prototyping.
  • Experience with cost models, scalability assessments, and technical and operational risk tradeoffs.
  • Strong cross-functional program ownership and execution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach others.
  • Excellent verbal, graphical, and technical communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Google Suite.

Compensation

  • Annual compensation range: $182,400–$273,600 USD.
  • Target midpoint: $228,000 USD.
  • Eligible employees may receive equity, benefits, and paid time off.
