Senior Accountant
Senior Accountant role leading month-end close, revenue recognition under ASC 606, payroll, and audit readiness for a high-growth travel tech startup. Requires active CPA and 3-6 years Big 4 or regional public accounting experience.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Close, Payroll & Reporting (Core — 50%)
- Lead the full monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycle, including journal entries, account reconciliations, roll-forwards, and flux analysis
- Prepare bi-monthly payroll for review, owning end-to-end processing including accurate calculation of wages, tax withholdings, deductions, and benefits
- Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with US GAAP, identifying and resolving technical accounting issues independently
- Own revenue recognition, including multi-element arrangements, deferred revenue schedules, and compliance with ASC 606
- Maintain a close calendar, drive accountability across the team, and continuously shorten the close timeline without sacrificing accuracy
- Serve as the primary owner of general ledger accounts
- Rethink accounts payable processes in coordination with FP&A to process invoices timely and provide accurate reporting
Internal Controls & Audit Readiness (20%)
- Design, document, and enforce internal controls across all accounting processes
- Serve as a liaison for external auditors: prepare audit schedules, respond to PBC requests, and manage the process to a clean, on-time audit
- Identify control weaknesses and implement improvement plans proactively
- Ensure the company is always audit-ready
Process Improvement & Systems (20%)
- Identify inefficiencies in existing accounting workflows and implement scalable solutions
- Partner with operations teams to improve data quality, financial systems, and cross-functional reporting
- Lead or support system implementations and migrations as the company scales
Financial Operations & Strategic Support (10%)
- Monitor budget performance and analyze variances
- Partner with tax advisors on federal and state compliance
- Provide clear, accurate financial data to support strategic decision-making
- Mentor junior accounting staff
Requirements
- Active CPA required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field
- 3-6 years of public accounting experience at a Big Four or large regional firm, with meaningful audit and/or tax experience
- Demonstrated experience with revenue recognition under ASC 606
- Deep understanding of US GAAP and the ability to research and apply technical accounting guidance independently
- Experience supporting audits, including preparation of schedules, walkthroughs, and PBC documentation
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large datasets
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must be authorized to work in the United States and based in or willing to relocate to New York City
Strongly Preferred
- Industry experience in a high-growth or startup environment
- Exposure to travel, SaaS, fintech, or marketplace business models
- Experience with lease accounting under ASC 842 and exposure to tax filings
- Hands-on experience with accounting and financial systems, as well as process automation, analytics, or BI tools
- Demonstrated ability to independently own the full month-end close in a fast-paced environment
