Software Engineer, Reconciliation & Reporting

Build and maintain data pipelines for reconciling card-network settlements against internal transaction data to power accurate financial, tax, and regulatory reporting at scale for a global payments platform. Requires 3+ years experience with batch/event-driven pipelines, orchestration tools, and strong SQL/programming skills in a high-stakes financial environment.

About the job

Responsibilities

  • Own small, well-bounded projects end-to-end: clarify requirements, design, build, test, ship, and follow up.
  • Build and maintain features within ingestion and reconciliation pipelines that match card-network and partner reports against internal transaction data.
  • Contribute to tooling that provides end-to-end traceability of money throughout the system.
  • Develop features for reporting and reconciliation products that are accurate, reliable, timely, scalable, and user-friendly for internal finance teams and external merchants.
  • Produce standardized journals and summaries that feed downstream accounting, audit, and analysis.
  • Contribute to large-scale tax and regulatory reporting systems, including US IRS information returns (1099 family at scale of tens of millions annually) and international regimes (EU CESOP, Australia, Ireland, Spain).
  • Support regulatory and compliance obligations (AML, KYC), with careful handling of sensitive and PII data, including TIN validation and secure form generation and filing.
  • Validate work using code review, tests, experiments, or usage signals (including for AI-assisted changes).
  • Debug and escalate production issues across services, providing clear context on changes and remaining risk.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, data analysts, finance, tax, and compliance partners on technical design and product decisions.
  • Review peers' work, apply feedback, document learnings including AI workflows.
  • Opportunistically improve systems by replacing manual work with automation.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional software or data engineering experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or similar) or equivalent experience.
  • Experience building or maintaining batch- or event-driven data pipelines, with exposure to workflow orchestration (e.g., Airflow, Temporal, Spark) and understanding of distributed systems.
  • Proficiency in at least one major programming language (Java, Python, Go) and solid SQL.
  • Experience delivering well-scoped projects or features end-to-end with guidance.
  • Strong communication skills: surface concerns with proposals, provide clear context in debugging.
  • Care for engineering quality: maintainable/testable code, code review, CI/CD, observability in high-stakes financial environment.
  • Proficiency using AI tools throughout the software development lifecycle with judgment on validation.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Exposure to financial, tax, regulatory, or payments reporting and reconciliation products.
  • Familiarity with payments ecosystem (merchants, acquirers, card networks, issuers/processors), authorization/clearing/settlement, card-network file formats, or ISO-8583.
  • Understanding of accounting principles, double-entry bookkeeping, and financial reconciliation.
  • Experience with cloud data warehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake) or distributed systems (Spark/PySpark, Delta Lake, Kafka, Hadoop).
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Kubernetes) and IaC (Terraform).
  • Interest in financial products and markets.
