Mechanical Engineer - New Grad

Design, analyze, integrate, and validate mechanical hardware for self-driving vehicles, including sensor systems, compute assemblies, fixtures, and vehicle components. The role is intended for 2026 mechanical engineering graduates with hands-on hardware, CAD, and testing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Support mechanical engineering development of Applied vehicles.
  • Contribute to mechanical design of external sensor suites, compute assemblies, and vehicle interiors.
  • Perform structural and thermal analysis of mechanical designs.
  • Design, analyze, and validate systems at the component, assembly, and fully integrated vehicle levels.
  • Design for scalability and manufacturability.
  • Design, fabricate, and assemble custom test fixtures.
  • Perform incoming quality control on design hardware, including visual inspection, pressure testing, and firmware flashing.
  • Set up devices under test and execute test scripts.
  • Produce documentation for testing, maintenance, safety, and team processes.
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure requirements and mechanical designs meet organizational needs.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent program, completed in 2026.
  • Formula SAE, Baja, solar car, rocketry, robotics, or similar hands-on build-team experience.
  • Coursework, internship, research, or project experience designing and building physical hardware.
  • Familiarity with CAD for navigating, designing, or modifying 3D models; SolidWorks preferred.
  • Exposure to FEA/CAE through coursework or projects.
  • Strong hands-on shop skills and willingness to work in a laboratory and vehicle-garage environment.
  • Ability to write clear technical documentation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Machining, CNC, metalworking, or welding experience.
  • Hardware reliability and testing experience.
  • Automotive repair and maintenance experience.
  • Exposure to lidar, radar, or camera components.
  • Custom harness cable design, drawing, or prototyping experience.
  • NVH experience.
  • Basic Python scripting for test execution and data capture.
