Staff Systems Engineer
Leads requirements, functional architecture, traceability, safety integration, and change-impact activities for an autonomous yard truck program. Requires a bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of systems engineering experience with complex cyber-physical systems and cross-functional technical leadership.
About the job
Responsibilities
Requirements and Traceability
- Own the capture, structure, review, quality, and maintenance of Product, System of Systems (SoS), and System requirements in Jama Connect.
- Maintain end-to-end traceability across SoS, Product, and System requirements.
- Link Product requirements to validation scenarios and SoS/System requirements to verification test cases.
- Resolve missing, incorrect, duplicate, or unjustified requirements and relationships.
Functional Architecture and Safety Integration
- Develop and maintain the Yard Truck SoS functional architecture.
- Derive, organize, map, and allocate requirements across autonomy, drive-by-wire, vehicle systems, operator interfaces, remote operations, and supporting systems.
- Support Functional Hazard Analysis and ISO 26262 Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment activities.
- Coordinate with the safety team to incorporate hazards, safety goals, mitigations, safety concepts, and safety-derived requirements into architecture, baselines, and verification approaches.
Implementation Alignment and Change Impact
- Allocate and trace System requirements to software, hardware, controls, interfaces, and vehicle elements.
- Confirm that product features are decomposed into implementable system behavior and represented in development, integration, verification, and validation activities.
- Identify requirements gaps, ambiguities, conflicts, and needed changes discovered during implementation and testing.
- Assess features, feature changes, and defects for impacts to requirements, architecture, safety, interfaces, allocations, verification, validation, and traceability.
- Distinguish implementation defects from requirements defects, architecture gaps, interface issues, and legitimate feature changes.
Systems Engineering Process and Tooling
- Define and mature systems engineering processes for the program.
- Evaluate and integrate AI-assisted requirements, architecture, traceability, review, and change-impact tools, subject to engineering review and configuration control.
- Improve the usability of systems artifacts through clear structures, terminology, visualizations, reports, dashboards, training, and workflows.
Technical Leadership
- Lead cross-functional reviews involving product, autonomy, software, hardware, controls, safety, test, vehicle integration, and operations.
- Resolve requirement, architecture, interface, and ownership issues through technical judgment and influence.
- Mentor systems engineers and guide stakeholders using Jama, architecture models, traceability information, and related engineering artifacts.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical discipline.
- Seven or more years of systems engineering experience supporting complex cyber-physical systems integrating software, hardware, sensing, controls, communications, and physical equipment.
- Experience with requirements development, decomposition, allocation, configuration management, and bidirectional traceability across multiple system hierarchy levels.
- Experience developing or maintaining functional architectures for interface management, implementation allocation, safety analysis, and verification planning.
- Experience coordinating across software, hardware, controls, safety, integration, product, and test organizations.
- Experience with Jama Connect, IBM DOORS, Polarion, or a comparable requirements platform.
- Strong technical leadership, facilitation, writing, and stakeholder-management skills.
Nice-to-Haves
- Systems engineering experience in autonomous vehicles, advanced driver-assistance systems, robotics, automated industrial equipment, or intelligent transportation.
- Experience with perception, localization, behavior planning, vehicle control, teleoperation, remote operations, or drive-by-wire systems.
- Experience supporting Functional Hazard Analysis, ISO 26262 HARA, functional safety concepts, or safety-derived requirements.
- Experience with model-based systems engineering tools.
- Experience evaluating, deploying, or governing AI-assisted engineering workflows.
Compensation and Benefits
- Base salary range: $150,000–$190,000.
- Equity included in most full-time, high-demand roles.
- Three healthcare plan options, including an HSA-eligible plan; the company covers 80% of premiums for employees and dependents.
- Company-paid basic life/AD&D and short- and long-term disability insurance.
- Company holidays, including a December winter break.
- 20 days of accrued paid time off per year.
- At least 7 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
- $9,000 annual tuition reimbursement or professional development stipend.
- 401(k) plan with company matching up to 4%.
