Distributed Systems Engineer, Analytical Database Platform

Build and scale distributed data platforms, database systems, delivery services, and APIs, with emphasis on reliability, performance, observability, and data integrity. Requires 3+ years of software development experience with distributed systems and databases; Golang experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable distributed systems across the data lifecycle.
  • Build and optimize high-throughput data delivery components for data integrity and low-latency delivery.
  • Develop and improve components of the Cloudflare Analytical Platform.
  • Scale, monitor, and maintain large-scale database clusters.
  • Develop customer-facing GraphQL APIs, log delivery, and alerting solutions.
  • Identify and remove bottlenecks in data ingestion and query performance.
  • Collaborate across teams to build data-driven solutions.
  • Contribute features and code to the ClickHouse open-source project.
  • Research and evaluate technologies for next-generation data platforms.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation outside standard working hours as needed.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of software development experience with distributed systems and databases.
  • Strong programming skills; Golang preferred.
  • Experience with observability stacks such as Prometheus and Grafana, including high-cardinality metrics at scale.
  • Strong SQL knowledge and understanding of database internals, design, optimization, and performance tuning.
  • Foundation in computer science, algorithms, data structures, distributed systems, and concurrency.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective collaboration and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • ClickHouse experience.
  • Data streaming technologies such as Kafka or Flink.
  • Scalable API development, particularly GraphQL.
  • Infrastructure as Code tools such as Salt or Terraform.
  • Linux container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.

Compensation

  • Portugal-based hires: €54,000–€91,000 annually.
  • Colorado-based hires: $136,000–$187,000 annually.
  • Washington-based hires: $150,000–$206,000 annually.
  • Compensation may vary by work location.
  • Eligible for participation in the company equity plan.
