Senior Android Engineer, Client Platform - Application Stability and Performance
Own the stability and performance of Duolingo’s Android learning app, leading architecture improvements and building tooling for tracing, benchmarking, and regression detection. The role requires strong Kotlin and modern Android expertise, experience diagnosing complex application issues, and mentorship skills.

Responsibilities
- Lead architectural initiatives to improve the slowest parts of the Android app, including startup and critical learning flows.
- Own and evolve performance tooling for tracing, benchmarking, and automated regression detection.
- Partner with Client Platform and Product feature teams to interpret and act on performance data.
- Foster engineering excellence around performance and mentor engineers across experience levels.
Requirements
- Experience shipping large-scale Android applications.
- Ability to identify root causes and resolve ANRs, memory leaks, dropped frames, and complex crashes.
- Strong Kotlin skills and deep familiarity with coroutines, Jetpack Compose, and modern architecture patterns.
- Experience optimizing startup time, memory, and network usage for low-memory devices.
- Strong problem-solving skills and enthusiasm for difficult technical challenges.
Nice-to-haves
- Expertise with Android tracing tools, including the AndroidX Tracing Library and Perfetto.
- Experience with crash observability tools such as Sentry and Android Vitals.
Compensation
- Base salary range: $182,800–$247,300 USD.
- Base salary is supplemented by equity compensation.
