Firmware Engineering Manager, Lyft Urban Solutions

Leads and grows a firmware engineering team developing embedded systems for micromobility products, while setting architecture, reliability, safety, and fleet operations strategy. Requires 8+ years of embedded C/C++ development, management or technical leadership experience, and strong expertise in real-time systems and connected hardware.

About the job

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of firmware engineers developing embedded software for e-bikes, scooters, batteries, docks, and charging infrastructure.
  • Set technical direction and architecture for IoT, powertrain, battery management, and docking/charging firmware, including safety-critical fault handling.
  • Own OTA update and fleet operations strategy, including secure staged rollouts, remote diagnostics, and field recovery mechanisms.
  • Partner with hardware, software, product, data science, manufacturing, operations, and compliance teams to prototype, develop, and ship mobility products.
  • Own team planning, roadmapping, sprint and release planning, staffing, hiring, and performance management.
  • Improve fielded products with a focus on reliability, safety, and rider/operator experience.
  • Represent firmware in regulatory and safety certification efforts, including UL 2849/2271, EN 18031, and RED/CRA.
  • Build engineering rigor through CI/CD, automated Hardware-in-the-Loop testing, code reviews, and on-call/incident response processes.
  • Communicate technical risks, tradeoffs, and progress to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Support direct-report career development and broader engineering initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years developing embedded systems in C/C++, including 2+ years directly managing or formally leading firmware or embedded engineers.
  • Experience translating product and business needs into roadmaps, staffing plans, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Deep understanding of embedded real-time operating systems and low-level operating-system concepts, including memory management, scheduling, threads, and interrupts.
  • Experience with ARM Cortex-M processors, electrical bring-up, and embedded debugging using debug probes, signal analyzers, oscilloscopes, and power analyzers.
  • Working knowledge of IoT, motor control, battery management systems, and CAN bus protocols for electric vehicles or similar hardware.
  • Experience with OTA update systems and remote fleet diagnostics for distributed hardware deployments.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated Hardware-in-the-Loop testing, and modern systems languages such as Rust alongside C/C++.
  • Familiarity with functional safety and regulatory frameworks such as ISO 26262, MISRA C, EN 18031, and UL standards.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills across NPI and sustaining engineering programs.
  • Excellent communication and technical strategy skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build inclusive, high-performing engineering teams and develop engineers' careers.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base salary: $176,000–$220,000 annually, excluding potential equity, bonus, and benefits.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Mental health benefits.
